Celebrate the People Behind Your Chapter: How to Create Meaningful Member Spotlights
Lead & Succeed | Chapter Leader Toolkit
How to Create Member Spotlights People Actually Want to Read
Member spotlights help your chapter celebrate the people behind the work, strengthen community, create useful content, and show prospective members what participation really looks like.
The Key Idea
Great member spotlights are not resumes. They are short, human stories that help people understand who your members are, what they care about, and why your chapter matters to them.
What You’ll Get From This Guide
- Ideas for choosing members to feature
- Three easy ways to collect their story
- Ready-to-use interview questions
- Simple phone-video tips
- A reusable member spotlight template
- A publishing and content-reuse plan
Your Members Are Already Your Best Stories
One of the easiest ways to make chapter communication more personal is to feature the people who make up the chapter itself.
Member spotlights can help you:
- Celebrate member contributions
- Recognize volunteers
- Show prospective members what the community looks like
- Create useful social and newsletter content
- Strengthen relationships with active members
- Humanize the technical work your chapter supports
You do not need a professional camera crew or a complicated production process.
You need a person, a few good questions, permission to share the story, and a simple plan.
THE SIMPLE SPOTLIGHT FORMULA
Choose a person → Ask a few good questions → Capture a photo or video → Get permission → Share their story
What Is a Member Spotlight?
A member spotlight is a short profile that highlights someone in your chapter.
It can be:
- A written profile
- A social media post
- A short video
- A photo with a quote
- A newsletter feature
- A slide shown at a chapter meeting
The format matters less than the story.
Who Should Your Chapter Feature?
You do not need to wait for someone to win an award or reach a major career milestone.
Strong spotlight candidates include:
SPOTLIGHT IDEAS
- Long-time members
- New members
- Chapter volunteers
- Students
- Early-career professionals
- Speakers
- Industry mentors
- Multi-generational AMPP families
- Veterans
- Local industry champions
- Members with interesting career paths or projects
How to Find People to Feature
Start with the people already participating in your chapter.
EASY PLACES TO START
- Ask your committee: Who has a great story? Who has been especially involved lately?
- Review event participation: Feature a speaker, volunteer, or first-time attendee.
- Look at your volunteers: Recognize someone who consistently helps.
- Ask for nominations: Invite members to recognize a colleague.
- Create variety: Feature people at different career stages, backgrounds, and experience levels.
Quick Tip:
Keep a simple list of five to ten potential spotlight candidates. That way, you are never starting from zero when you need content.
3 Easy Ways to Collect a Member’s Story
1. Ask Them to Submit Written Answers
This is usually the simplest option.
Ask the member to provide:
- A headshot or photo from the field
- Short answers to three to five questions
- Their job title and company
- Permission to publish the information and image
You can collect responses through:
- A Microsoft Form
- A Google Form
- Another chapter-approved submission method
2. Record a Quick Interview at an Event
If the member is already at a chapter meeting or event, ask whether they would be comfortable recording a short spotlight.
SAY THIS
“Would you be comfortable doing a quick member spotlight with us? We’d love to introduce you to the chapter community. It will only take a couple of minutes, and we’ll keep it simple.”
3. Let Them Record Their Own Video
Members can also record a short video on their own phone.
Give them clear instructions:
- Choose a quiet location
- Use good lighting
- Keep the camera at eye level
- Answer two or three questions
- Keep the final video short
GET PERMISSION BEFORE YOU PUBLISH
Before sharing a member’s name, photo, video, quote, employer information, or personal story, make sure they understand where the spotlight may appear and agree to the use.
Keep the approval process simple, but make it explicit.
Questions to Ask
Good questions help members tell stories instead of listing credentials.
Pick three to five that fit the person.
GENERAL QUESTIONS
- What do you do in the materials protection and performance industry?
- How did you get started in this field?
- What is one project or accomplishment you are proud of?
- Why did you join AMPP?
- What do you enjoy most about being part of this chapter?
- What is something people may be surprised to learn about your work?
STUDENTS & EARLY-CAREER PROFESSIONALS
- What inspired you to pursue this career path?
- What are you most excited to learn?
- What advice would you give someone considering the industry?
EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONALS
- What keeps you passionate about this work?
- How has the industry changed since you started?
- What lesson has shaped your career most?
CHAPTER VOLUNTEERS
- What made you want to volunteer with the chapter?
- What has been your most rewarding volunteer experience?
- What would you tell someone who is thinking about getting involved?
ONE QUESTION THAT OFTEN GETS A GREAT ANSWER
“What is something about your career or AMPP experience that you wish more people knew?”
Keep Member Videos Simple
You do not need professional video equipment.
| Area | Keep It Simple |
|---|---|
| Lighting | Face a window or other soft light. Avoid bright light directly behind the person. |
| Sound | Move away from loud crowds and background noise. |
| Camera | Keep the camera near eye level and frame the person comfortably. |
| Length | Aim for one main idea and a short final video. |
| Tone | Conversational is better than overly rehearsed. |
Quick Tip:
Let the member know retakes are completely normal. People are much more comfortable on camera when they know the first attempt does not have to be perfect.

- Your chapter website
- The chapter community page
- Facebook or Instagram, if your chapter uses them
- Your chapter email newsletter
- Slides at a meeting or event
- Volunteer recruitment
- Membership promotion
HAVE AN ESPECIALLY STRONG STORY?
If you have a story that may be useful beyond the chapter—such as a unique career journey, student story, multi-generational connection, major milestone, or other compelling member experience—contact your AMPP staff liaison to ask whether there may be opportunities to share it through broader AMPP channels.
Make Spotlights a Repeatable Chapter Habit
You do not need to publish one every week.
Choose a rhythm your chapter can maintain.
SIMPLE STARTING RHYTHM
Active chapter: Try one spotlight each month.
Smaller or less active chapter: Try one spotlight each quarter.
Build a Small Member Story Library
Save approved content somewhere future chapter volunteers can find it.

END EACH SPOTLIGHT WITH AN INVITATION

YOUR 30-SECOND SPOTLIGHT CHECK
Before You Publish
- Does the spotlight sound human instead of like a resume?
- Is the member’s name, title, and company correct?
- Do you have permission to use the photo, video, and quotes?
- Is the story respectful and accurate?
- Is there one memorable detail or quote?
- Have you avoided sharing unnecessary personal information?
- Can the content be reused in another chapter channel?
TRY THIS THIS MONTH
Publish Your First Simple Member Spotlight
- Choose one member your chapter would be proud to recognize.
- Ask three questions.
- Collect one approved photo.
- Use the template in this guide.
- Ask the member to approve it.
- Publish it in one chapter channel.
- Reuse it somewhere else later.
What to Take Away From This
Member spotlights do more than fill a content calendar.
They show what your chapter looks like through the people who make it valuable. Start with one member, ask a few thoughtful questions, keep the story human, get permission before sharing it, and build from there.
