Celebrate Your Members: Creating a Member Recognition Program That Builds Community

Lead & Succeed | Chapter Leader Toolkit

Your members are earning certifications, advancing their careers, volunteering, mentoring, receiving awards, and reaching important milestones. Giving them an easy way to share those accomplishments can strengthen your chapter community while creating authentic content people are proud to share.

The Key Idea

You don’t have to discover every accomplishment yourself. Give members a simple, opt-in way to tell you what they’d like the chapter to celebrate.

What You’ll Get From This Guide

  • A simple framework for collecting member accomplishments
  • Ideas for what kinds of milestones to recognize
  • Copy-and-paste submission language
  • Suggested permission language for member submissions
  • A simple recognition schedule your chapter can maintain
  • A reusable member spotlight template

1. Every Member Has a Story

One of the best ways to build an engaged chapter isn’t by publishing more promotional content. It’s by celebrating the people who make your chapter successful.

Members may be:

  • Earning new certifications
  • Receiving professional or industry awards
  • Starting new roles or earning promotions
  • Reaching career milestones
  • Mentoring students or early-career professionals
  • Volunteering in their communities
  • Serving the chapter or AMPP
  • Publishing, presenting, or contributing technical expertise

The challenge is that chapter leaders may never hear about those accomplishments. And even when you do, you shouldn’t assume someone wants the news shared publicly.

A voluntary submission process solves both problems: members decide what they want recognized, and your chapter gains accurate information directly from the person involved.

2. Why Member Recognition Matters

Recognition is about much more than filling a social media calendar.

It builds community. Members get to know the people behind the chapter.

It reinforces belonging. People see that participation and achievement are noticed.

It demonstrates member value. Prospective and current members can see the expertise and opportunities within the chapter.

It encourages engagement. Recognition gives members another reason to interact with chapter communications.

It creates authentic content. Member stories often feel more personal and relevant than purely promotional posts.

Quick Tip:
Think of recognition as a member-engagement program first and a content strategy second.

3. Let Members Tell You Their News

Rather than asking chapter volunteers to track every possible milestone, create one consistent place where members can submit news they’d like recognized.

Your chapter could use:

  • An online submission form
  • A dedicated chapter email address
  • A recurring newsletter link
  • A QR code displayed at chapter meetings
  • A link in event follow-up communications

The specific tool matters less than consistency. Members should know exactly where to go whenever they have something to share.

Invite Members to Share Their News

Short version:
“Have exciting news to share? We’d love to celebrate your accomplishments. Submit a professional milestone, chapter achievement, award, certification, or other news for possible recognition by our chapter.”

Newsletter version:
“Our members are doing incredible things, and we want to celebrate them. If you’ve earned a certification, received an award, started a new role, reached a career milestone, published an article, volunteered, or have another accomplishment you’d like to share, send it our way for possible recognition in chapter communications.”

4. Make It Easy to Participate

The easier the process is, the more likely members are to use it.

BUILD YOUR SUBMISSION FORM

What to Ask Members For

  • Name
  • Company or organization
  • Chapter affiliation
  • Achievement or milestone
  • A short description of the accomplishment
  • Photo, if they would like one included
  • Relevant link, if applicable
  • Preferred social media tag or profile, if applicable
  • Permission to share the information publicly

Keep the form short enough that a member can complete it in a few minutes.

5. Give Members Examples of What to Share

People are more likely to submit news when they understand what counts.

Professional Achievements

  • New certifications
  • Promotions
  • New jobs
  • Career milestones
  • Retirement announcements

Chapter Contributions

  • Volunteer recognition
  • Committee service
  • Leadership milestones
  • Years of membership
  • Special chapter contributions

Awards & Recognition

  • Industry awards
  • Company recognition
  • Technical accomplishments
  • Speaking engagements
  • Published articles

Student Success

  • Scholarships
  • Graduation
  • Internships
  • Competition awards
  • Student chapter achievements

You don’t have to publish every submission. The examples simply help members understand the kinds of accomplishments your chapter is interested in celebrating.

6. Ask for Permission Up Front

Members should know how their information may be used before they submit it.

Include a clear consent statement and checkbox in your submission process.

Sample Permission Language

“By submitting this information, I give the chapter permission to share the information and materials I provide through chapter communication channels, which may include social media, newsletters, email, and the chapter website.”

Adapt consent language as needed to align with your chapter and AMPP’s approved privacy and communications practices.

7. Keep Recognition Consistent

Recognition doesn’t need to happen immediately, and it doesn’t need to become another weekly obligation for chapter volunteers.

Choose a cadence your chapter can realistically maintain.

Monthly Member Spotlight or Volunteer Spotlight
Quarterly Member Achievements Roundup
Periodically Student Success Showcase or Volunteer Recognition
Annually Chapter Recognition Celebration or Year-in-Review
Quick Tip:
Consistency matters more than frequency. A quarterly roundup that actually happens is more valuable than a weekly series that disappears after a month.

8. Make the Recognition Easy to Share

Once you feature a member, send the recognition directly to them.

Include:

  • The finished social graphic, if applicable
  • A direct link to the post or article
  • A short thank-you or congratulations message
  • An invitation to share it with their own network

When members share the post, the recognition reaches coworkers, friends, peers, and other professionals who may not already know your chapter.

Send This When a Member Is Featured

“Congratulations again on [ACHIEVEMENT]! We were excited to recognize you through the chapter. Here’s the link to your feature: [LINK]. Please feel free to share it with your network, and thank you for giving us the opportunity to celebrate your accomplishment.”

9. Keep the Recognition Meaningful

Recognition does not need to be elaborate to feel personal.

SIMPLE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT FORMULA

Four Things Are Often Enough

  1. Who: Member name and role/company, when appropriate
  2. What: The accomplishment or milestone
  3. Why it matters: One sentence of context
  4. Congratulations: A genuine message from the chapter

Whenever possible, use the member’s own words, include a photo they’ve chosen to provide, and keep the tone warm rather than overly promotional.

What to Take Away From This

Every chapter is filled with people doing work worth celebrating. You don’t need a complicated recognition program or a large communications team to highlight them.

Create a simple way for members to share the milestones they’re proud of, recognize them consistently, and make that recognition easy to share. Over time, those stories help build a stronger sense of community while showing others the people, expertise, and opportunities that make your chapter valuable.
