Starting Strong: How to Launch Your AMPP Chapter with Purpose
Lead & Succeed | Chapter Leader Toolkit
The first few months of a new chapter can shape everything that follows. You do not need to launch every program at once. What matters most is building a clear leadership structure, creating reliable ways to communicate, delivering an early member experience, and establishing a rhythm your team can sustain.
The Key Idea
Your first 90 days are not about doing everything. They are about establishing the people, systems, communication, and early wins that make everything else easier.
What You’ll Get From This Guide
- A simple 30/60/90-day launch framework
- Priorities for your first leadership meetings
- A practical first-event plan
- A communication setup checklist
- A member-engagement starter plan
- A direct link to AMPP’s 30/60/90 Day Chapter Launch Checklist
Start With a Foundation, Not a Full Calendar
New chapter leaders often feel pressure to immediately schedule events, recruit volunteers, find sponsors, build social media, create committees, and communicate with everyone at once.
That can create activity without creating a system.
A stronger launch starts by answering a few basic questions:
- Who is responsible for what?
- How will the leadership team communicate?
- How will members hear from the chapter?
- What is the first useful experience we can deliver?
- What needs to happen next—not six months from now?
START WITH THE OFFICIAL CHECKLIST
AMPP provides a
30/60/90 Day Chapter Launch Checklist
to help new chapter leaders organize the launch process into manageable phases.
Use this article as practical context around the checklist—not as a replacement for current AMPP requirements.
THE FIRST-90-DAYS FORMULA
Organize → Connect → Deliver → Repeat
Days 1–30: Build the Foundation
Your first month is about clarity.
The leadership team should understand who is involved, what everyone owns, where information lives, and how the chapter will communicate.
FIRST 30 DAYS
☐ Confirm the leadership team
☐ Define each officer’s responsibilities
☐ Review current AMPP chapter resources
☐ Confirm official chapter communication channels
☐ Decide where chapter working files will live
☐ Set a regular leadership meeting rhythm
☐ Identify the first member-facing activity
☐ Decide how members will hear from the chapter
Use the First Leadership Meeting to Create Clarity
FIRST LEADERSHIP MEETING AGENDA
1. Why does this chapter exist locally?
2. Who are the members and professionals we want to serve?
3. Who owns each leadership responsibility?
4. What is our first member-facing activity?
5. How will we communicate?
6. What does each person need from AMPP?
7. What must happen before the next meeting?
Define What Members Should Be Able to Expect
You do not need a complicated mission statement.
But your leadership team should agree on the kind of local value the chapter is trying to create.
COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE
“Members should participate in this chapter because it helps them __________________.”
Your answer might include:
- Meet other local professionals
- Learn from technical experts
- Build professional relationships
- Develop leadership skills
- Discover AMPP education and certification resources
- Connect with employers, students, or emerging professionals
- Contribute to the local industry community
KEEP THE FIRST GOAL SIMPLE
You do not need to prove the chapter can do everything. Prove that it can do one useful thing well.
Set Up Communication Before You Need It
Waiting until the first event is ready to figure out email access, social accounts, files, and chapter contacts creates unnecessary stress.
COMMUNICATION SETUP
☐ Confirm access to the official chapter email account
☐ Confirm who can send chapter communications
☐ Confirm social media ownership and access
☐ Review your Chapter Community or chapter website
☐ Create one shared working folder
☐ Save approved logo and brand resources
☐ Decide how leadership information and passwords/access will be handed off appropriately
Use AMPP Resources Before Building Your Own
Your leadership team does not need to invent every form, template, process, or guide.

Days 31–60: Give Members Something to Participate In
Once the basic systems are in place, shift attention outward.
Members need to see that the new chapter is becoming active.
DAYS 31–60
☐ Finalize the first event or member activity
☐ Begin member communication
☐ Create a simple event-promotion timeline
☐ Personally invite a small group of likely participants
☐ Identify simple volunteer opportunities
☐ Begin building local relationships and partnerships
☐ Capture questions and feedback from members
Make the First Event Achievable
Your first activity does not have to be the biggest event the chapter will ever hold.
Choose something your team can execute well.
| Good Early Option | Why It Can Work |
|---|---|
| Networking meetup | Simple format and useful for relationship building |
| Technical presentation | Provides immediate professional value |
| Chapter kickoff meeting | Introduces the chapter and invites members into the planning process |
| Facility or project tour | Creates a practical local experience when appropriate and feasible |
DEFINE THE EARLY WIN
A successful first event does not have to mean a packed room. It can mean delivering a useful experience, creating new connections, and giving members a reason to come back.
Personally Invite People
Especially during a launch, do not rely only on broad announcements.
Personal outreach can help the chapter establish its first core group of participants.
SAY THIS
Hi [NAME] — we’re getting the new [CHAPTER NAME] Chapter up and running, and we’re hosting [EVENT] on [DATE]. I thought of you because [REASON]. We’d love to have you join us if you’re available. Details are here: [LINK]
Days 61–90: Turn the Launch Into a Rhythm
Once you have delivered an early member experience, the next goal is continuity.
DAYS 61–90
☐ Follow up after the first event
☐ Ask members what they want next
☐ Recognize early volunteers
☐ Schedule the next one or two activities
☐ Build a 90-day communications calendar
☐ Identify potential sponsors or local partners where appropriate
☐ Document what worked and what should change
☐ Confirm responsibilities for the next quarter
Follow Up Quickly
The chapter launch does not end when the first event ends.
AFTER YOUR FIRST EVENT
- Thank attendees
- Thank speakers, volunteers, and partners
- Share a few photos or a useful takeaway
- Ask what members would like to see next
- Invite interested people into small volunteer roles
- Tell members when they will hear from the chapter again
Establish a Predictable Communication Rhythm
Members should not hear from the chapter only when you need them to register for something.
| Communication | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Chapter Update | Tell members what is happening and what is next |
| Event Promotion | Explain why upcoming activities are useful |
| Member Recognition | Make chapter participation visible and personal |
| Resource Sharing | Connect members to useful AMPP opportunities and information |
Start Building the Next Layer of Volunteers
Founding officers should not become the permanent owners of every chapter task.
START SMALL
Ask members to help with one clear task before asking them to take on a full leadership role.
Early volunteer roles might include:
- Event check-in
- Taking photos
- Welcoming first-time attendees
- Helping identify speakers
- Sharing event promotions
- Helping with venue setup
- Supporting one small committee task
Define What a Good First 90 Days Looks Like
A chapter launch should not be judged only by membership count or event attendance.
Look at whether the foundation is becoming stronger.
90-DAY SUCCESS MIGHT LOOK LIKE
☐ Leadership responsibilities are clear
☐ The team has reliable communication and file systems
☐ Members have heard from the chapter consistently
☐ At least one useful member experience has been delivered
☐ Members have had a chance to provide feedback
☐ New volunteers are beginning to participate
☐ The next quarter is already taking shape
DON’T CONFUSE BUSY WITH HEALTHY
A chapter with one useful event, clear leadership, reliable communication, and a plan for what comes next may be in a stronger position than a chapter that launches five activities nobody can sustain.
Hold a 90-Day Review
ASK THE LEADERSHIP TEAM
1. What worked?
2. What felt harder than it needed to?
3. What did members respond to?
4. Where do we still need AMPP support?
5. What should we repeat?
6. What should we simplify?
7. What are our top three priorities for the next 90 days?
Document What You Learn
A launch creates knowledge that future chapter leaders should not have to rediscover.
SAVE THE PLAYBOOK
Keep the useful timelines, templates, event notes, contact information, leadership decisions, and lessons from the first 90 days so the chapter gets easier to run—not harder—over time.
YOUR 30-SECOND LAUNCH CHECK
By Day 90, Can You Answer Yes?
- Does everyone know their role?
- Do we have a reliable way to communicate?
- Do members know the chapter exists and what it offers?
- Have we delivered something useful?
- Have we asked members what they need?
- Are new people beginning to participate?
- Do we know what happens next?

Build Your First 30 Days Before Planning the Full Year
Download the AMPP 30/60/90 Day Checklist and schedule one leadership meeting.
Before that meeting ends, assign owners for the first 30-day priorities, identify your first member-facing activity, and set the date for your next leadership check-in.
What to Take Away From This
A successful chapter launch is not about how much your team can accomplish in 90 days.
Build a clear leadership foundation, establish communication, deliver an early member experience, listen to feedback, invite more people into the work, and create a plan for what comes next. Those early systems and relationships are what give the chapter room to grow.
